Hello dear candidates to MISS SL ♛ 2020!
For the second runway challenge we are traveling to New York City. In May the so called “Met Gala ” opens this year’s fashion exhibition by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The annual fundraising gala, established since 1948, is considered to be one of the most prominent and most exclusive social events in the world, with a ticket said to be cost around 30.000 USD. With the guidance of Vogue Editor-in-Chiefs Diana Vreeland and Anna Wintour the event has not only become the fashion industries’ most important red carpet event, but a must in the schedules of celebrities from all walks of life, film- and music stars and -producers, designers, models, athletes, business executives and the most wealthy philantropists.
Besides the dress code set to White Tie since 2014, the attendees are expected to uphold the exhibition theme of the year with their attire. Each year fashion houses rival to clad the celebrities into the most glamorous, extravagant and even outrageous designs of the year, such as Rihanna in a mini dress with a papal hat by Maison Margiela for the Heavenly Bodies theme in 2018. This year’s exhibition theme is “About Time: Fashion and Duration” . Andrew Bolton, Head Curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute says that he found inspiration for the exhibition in the 1992 Sally Potter film Orlando, which was based on the time-traveling Virginia Woolf novel of the same name. “There’s a wonderful scene,” he says, “in which Tilda Swinton enters the maze in an 18th-century woman’s robe à la Francaise, and as she runs through it, her clothes change to mid-19th-century dress, and she reemerges in 1850s England. That’s where the original idea came from.”
For this second runway challenge we are asking you, the candidates in the MISS SL ♛ 2020 competition, to dress up as if you were invited to attend this year’s Met Gala. The exhibition themes do not provide a clear stylistic directive and allow a broad interpretation. You’re not limited to a certain period of time like Bolton’s inspiration but you can interpret it into any time you like. However, keep in mind that it’s a red carpet event and the official dress code is White Tie.
We hope you are going to enjoy this second runway challenge. For this show you will be joined by the FASHICON 2020 aspirants, who will display their outfits for the “Modern Art” challenge.
Yours sincerely,
